Q: Are you open all year?
A: Yes, we are open all year. From mid Spring through New Year's we are open seven days a week, with a few minor exceptions. January through April we "slack off" and remain open only five days a week!
Q: Do your books cost the same as books on the mainland?
A: Indeed they do, as books are "prepriced", unlike most retail items. Other than special discounts a store might offer, the price printed on a book is the price of the book... on Lopez, in Seattle or New York City.
Q: Does it cost extra to Special Order a book?
A: Not at all. Though some store do charge a small fee, we at Islehaven include Special Orders as part of our Customer Service -- no extra charge, no shipping charges... and the books usually arrive within a week, sometimes a day. We can't fit every book in print in our tiny space -- be we can get it for you! Please ask us.
Q: How do you choose your books?
A: That's a little more complicated to answer. We read reviews of forthcoming books, we are sent Advance Reader's Copies of many books, we read about thousands of books being published every month and try to decide what might be of interest to both islanders and visitors... and then filter through those to choose the best. Years of experience as an English Teacher, Librarian, Bookseller and Reader also contribute to some of these decisions. Suggestion from customers play a large role, as well.
Q: You seem to have read everything in here. How do you find time to read all these books?
A: Well, not having a TV helps a lot. And, to be truthful, there are a FEW books I haven't read yet....
