A Children’s Interest Bestseller List is also posted. As
Young Adult Fantasy has become so rich in offerings it has its
own section separate from YA general fiction/non-fiction.
A wide
variety of activity kits, young readers, story books, and baby
books make up the balance of the extensive Children’s section. |
BOOKS ABOUT THE SAN JUANS ...
a brief sampling
Moon Handbook: San Juan Islands -- This guidebook by Don Pitcher is simply the best overall travel guide to the San Juans. Don actually visits the islands and spends some time here while preparing the regularly published updated editions. Included is all the usual "what, where, how-do-you-get-there" sort of info; in addition, Don includes evaluative comments regarding accommodations, eateries and shops, as well as historical snippets and even an occasional recipe.
San Juan Islands: Crown Jewel of the Pacific Northwest by Mark Gardner -- The photographs in this coffeetable book are lovely. Gardener lives on San Juan, and has captured classic vistas and more in this, the only hardcover photobook on these islands currently in print. The frontmatter contains some good information on the islands... both historical and otherwise.
San Juan Islands Impressions by Charles Gurche -- Smaller in format and paperback, this little collection of photographs is charming, colorful and wide in the scope of its photographs. For under $10, this is a "must have" remainder of any visit. |

LOCAL AUTHORS:
Kindred Spirits: Stories, Passions and Portraits from the Heart of Community This award winning book written by islanders Lorrie Harrison with photographs by Greg Ewert is a collection of essays and photoessays about 32 Lopez residents ranging in age from 8-80+, and captures the “something special” that seems to exist in people drawn to island living.
With Love and Butter: Recipes from Holly B’s Bakery This lovely book would be worth having for the recipes alone. The addition of stories from Holly’s life (about starting the bakery or raising her boys on the island), the several page history of Lopez called “Back in Time”, and various sidebars (the life of a night baker, for example) simply add to its value. Cap this off with reproductions of her mother’s (Diana Bower) evocative block prints between the chapters – the result is delightful book to savor… in many ways!
There are numerous other books by Local Authors – both fiction and non-fiction – some of which pertain to the islands. Please come in to see the wide range these books.
Signed copies of most Local Author books are usually available. |
